What this category covers

This is the break-time end of the site. Some of it asks for five minutes and no thought: Memory Match, Colour Clash, Missile Defence, or a hand of Spider Solitaire while something else finishes downloading. Some of it is a proper sit-down problem. Killer Sudoku, Skyscrapers, Aquarium and Norinori want a pencil-and-paper frame of mind, and they reward patience rather than speed.

The board and word games sit between the two. Breakthrough is a short strategy game about getting one piece to the far side. Snakes & Ladders is pure luck, which is the point of it. Boggle turns a letter grid into a word hunt, and Traffic Jam asks you to slide blocks aside to clear a path out. People arrive here to fill a gap in the day, to give a child something to do, or to keep a quiet room busy.

What a browser changes

The puzzles are generated on your own device, in the tab, at the moment you ask for a new one. That has a pleasant consequence: the supply does not run out, and two people rarely get the same grid. It also sets the real limit. A generator has to prove a puzzle has exactly one solution, and that search gets costly fast, so the very largest sizes are not always offered.

Because nothing is sent anywhere, there is nothing to sign into and nothing to sync. The honest cost is that no account carries your progress from one device to the next, and there is no global leaderboard to climb. The gain is that once the page has loaded it keeps working with the network off, so a game survives a tunnel or a bad hotel Wi-Fi.

Choosing one, and the common mistake

Pick by what you want from the next ten minutes, not by name. Reaction games like Missile Defence and Colour Clash need attention but little thinking. Solitaire and the board games sit in the middle. Killer Sudoku, Skyscrapers and Aquarium will hold you far longer than you planned. If a puzzle name means nothing to you, open it anyway; each page carries its rules and controls.

The common mistake with logic grids is guessing. Puzzles such as Light Up, Akari and Norinori have a single solution, so a guess that happens to fit often collapses twenty moves later. Find the square with only one possible answer, place that, and work outwards. On a phone, turn the screen sideways for the bigger grids. Tapping the right cell matters more than tapping quickly.

Why a puzzle here has one answer, not several

A logic puzzle with two answers is not a hard puzzle, it is a broken one. You solve it, the grid refuses you, and there is no way to tell whether you were wrong or the puzzle was. So the generators here do not simply scatter clues and hope.

The pattern is the same across the grid puzzles. The generator builds a finished board, takes clues away one at a time, and after each removal solves the board again from scratch and counts how many answers it can find. The moment a second answer appears, that clue goes back. Only a board that still has exactly one answer is ever handed to you.

Counting stops at two on purpose. Nothing needs to know that a bad puzzle has nine answers; it only needs to know a second one exists, and stopping there keeps the check fast enough to run while the page loads.

This is also why some board sizes are missing. When a size could not be made to hold a single answer often enough to be worth offering, it was dropped rather than shipped with a warning attached. A few puzzle types were left unfinished for the same reason.

Pull the plug and keep playing

None of these games talk to a server once the page has loaded. There is no round trip when you take a turn, so there is no lag on a slow connection, and turning the network off mid-game changes nothing. That is worth knowing on a train.

It also means your scores stay yours. Nothing is sent anywhere to be counted, ranked or kept, and there is no account to make. Where a game remembers a best score it is stored by your own browser, and clearing your browser data clears it.

One consequence is honest to state: a score here cannot be compared with anyone else's, because nothing collects them. These are games to fill ten minutes, not a league.

Named for what they are

Every game on this page is named after what you actually do in it. None of them borrow the name of a commercial game, and where a title was too close to somebody's trademark it was renamed.

That can make a familiar game harder to spot. If you are hunting for a classic you know by its shop name, read the one-line description rather than the title, and search by what happens in the game instead: match three, take tricks, place stones, clear mines.
